What is the Best Weight Loss Program for Me?

You may be wondering what weight loss programs and personal finance have in common? After all, this is a personal finance site geared towards finding ways to build new income streams and saving money. Not a site that focuses on shedding extra pounds and exercising.

The truth is, my family’s health is directly tied to our finances. If one of the members of our family gets sick – we go to the doctor and shell out a $30 medical copay. When one of my children needs some medication, we go to the pharmacy and pay our prescription copay. These are just the low cost examples of how our health is related to our finances. If my wife or I were to develop diabetes or some other illness, that is even more money coming out of our pocket.

As I watch my medical expenses rise each year at a more rapid pace than inflation, I start to get concerned. While I consider my family to be fairly healthy, I think there is more we can do to stay fit. This is why my wife and I are making a conscious effort this year to try and live a healthier lifestyle.

One of the goals I have for myself is to drop some weight. In order to do that, I need to decide the best weight loss program for me.

What is the Best Weight Loss Program for Me

I recently discovered that I could lose at least 10 more pounds and have a body mass index (BMI) that would be considered normal weight. This was a bit of a shock to me as I always thought I was right at my normal weight, when in fact I was on the high end of it. In fact, if I were to put on 10 more lbs. this year, I would be considered overweight. That is less than 1 lb. per month!

I don’t believe in fad diets or really anything artificial you put into your body to lose weight. I consider that cheating and you are probably doing your body more harm than good. Exercising and eating healthy are better options for someone like me.

Over the next 10 weeks, I am challenging myself to drop 10 pounds. That is a manageable 1 pound per week, which shouldn’t be too hard.

I will use a combination of exercise and diet to accomplish my goal. I already run 20+ miles per week, so I plan to add extra miles and incorporate other cardio activities into my routine. When it comes to my diet, I am not going to starve myself. Instead, I will cut out my evening snacking and begin to eliminate the amount of processed foods that I eat.

I believe that these two simple lifestyle changes can help me reach my goals.

My Weight Loss Goals

This past Monday, I weighed in at 172.8 pounds which will be my baseline starting point. Every week, I plan to weigh in to see where I am at. My goal is to average losing 1 pound per week for the next 2.5 months.

  • Week 1 – 172.8

I plan to check in each week and give an update on my status as well as some of the things I am doing to help shed some pounds.

Wish me luck!

My DH – b4 we met – lost around 100 pounds just from exercising like crazy and counting calories. Nothing fancy, no weight loss clinics or groups.

@Emily – That is great! Exercising and diet are the only natural ways to lose weight.
