I think you goal of attaining twitter users is NOT smart and IS smart at the same time. FIRST you must define what you want in a twitter user. You can have 50K followers but what KIND of followers. Many of the programs are going to give you spammers or people that just tune you out. I have decent results but I am in process of weeding out a bunch that are just using me to get their posts out to more people.

If you are using twitter just for advertizing you might want more than 50K followers unless you are able to offer value. I might start kicking off all the ones that don't contribute conversationally or that dont' retweet or offer something of value. Not sure yet how deep the cuts will be.

if you are going to have a bunch of followers that is smart but only if you are smart about why and how.

@Mike - I don't disagree with that. I think getting 2000 subscribers to a blog or email list is much better (and more difficult). I want to use Twitter to bring people to my site and stay which is part of my strategy.

I don't think you should ignore it, like facebook for example, but I don't think trying to get 2000 followers is any great feat. Take a look at this article: http://leodimilo.com/internetmarketingblog/social-media-money-system-and-what-they-dont-tell-you/

If you can get 2000 subscribers to your blog or email list, that would be better :)

@Mike - I appreciate your opinion. I use to think Twitter was an absolute waste of time and I just didn't understand how it could help. As I read more about it and see other businesses and entrepreneurs use it to build their business, I think I can leverage it to my advantage. Only time will tell I guess.

@Ruth - I will be giving several updates as I move along and will pass along info on the tools I use. I am actually trying out a few right now and then will narrow things down a little before posting.
