Writing How To articles on eHow has been one of my top passive income earning streams over the last several months. I continue to see double digit earnings increases month over month, while keeping my output of articles fairly constant. At some point as I scale back on the number of articles written each month, I expect to see my earnings continue to grow.
Over the last several months, I have written an average of 20 – 25 articles on eHow every month. Each of those articles takes me around 20 minutes to write. That means for the month of April I spent around 7.3 hours writing, proof reading, and submitting articles. Calculating my dollars per hour in earnings for this work equates to about $7.90 per hour. Last month I reported making about $4.00 per hour. You can obviously see the significant increase in my pay. Now if I could just get my boss at work to commit to that kind of increase!
The numbers above were merely a tool to display the power of writing articles on eHow (or any other outlet) to generate income. Overtime, my dollars per hour should continue to increase at a decent rate. What does this tell us? Passive income requires up front effort and hard work. If I charted out my earnings per hour for the past 8 months, you would see a gradual increase each month. That is because I have put in a lot of hard work upfront and am starting to see nice gains several months down the road.

Top Five Money Earners for April
I have been highlighting my top earning articles each month to help identify any trends or topics that seem to be in favor. I believe this helps to uncover new opportunities for growth on eHow as well as PFI and other streams of income that I am working to build. Here are my top five money earners from April -
- How to Sell Covered Call Options – $6.53
- How to Find Monthly Dividend Stocks – $5.09
- How to Start a Vegetable Garden Planting at Home – $4.07
- How to Find the Highest Paying Dividend Stocks – $3.78
- How to be Successful Day Trading Options – $2.88
After reviewing my list of top performing articles for April based on earnings, I have identified an existing trend as well as a few interesting items detailed below.
- Investing Articles – As you can tell, 4 of my top 5 articles are around trading stocks and options which has been a trend for several months now. My top earner for the month (How to Sell Covered Calls) continues to be my all-time money earner as well as the first article I have ever written on eHow. It seems that articles around the stock market, insurance, and mortgage topics tend to earn the most for me.
- Gardening – The other non-investing related article was around gardening which I attribute to the season. Everyone is busy putting in gardens this year so it was not a surprise to see this article in the top 5.
- New Articles – This is where I am a little puzzled to be honest. With the exception of my top earning article, the other 4 articles were written in April (3) and March (1). In fact, overall my April articles made up 25% of my earnings for the month and March accounted for 26% of the earnings. That is over 50% of my earnings from the most recent two months. I am not sure if I am doing a better job including SEO techniques into my articles (doubt it), sending updates to Twitter (maybe), or something else that is going on (probably). I have read several other eHow writers are reporting significant decrease during the month of April in earnings.
Have you noticed any new trends with your eHow articles? How did your earnings fare for the month of April?

Awesome earnings! Congrats.
I noticed a jump in my April earnings at eHow and since I haven’t been able to write in a while, the earnings are almost entirely passive, which is exciting.

@Julie – Thanks! You were actually one of the reasons I first started writing for eHow. I followed your status for a long time and realized the potential! So I guess I owe you a THANKS!

@Brandon – Thanks. While I try to devote the majority of my time to creating content on sites I own, the earnings potential from eHow is just too good to ignore. Overtime I will probably write less and less for them once I get my niche sites and other campaigns moving along.
Good luck to ya!

Are these earnings all from the revenue generated from the articles? I haven’t written for eHow. Since I’m from the UK a lot of these websites won’t pay me for upfront articles
but they will pay for revenue generated which seems pretty good from the time you’ve put in!

@Web Career Girl – All of my earnings are from the eHow revenue. I have yet to generate any affiliate income from my articles. I am actually in the process of going back and updating older ones to include affiliate links as I didn’t know what I was doing at first.

Nice earnings my friend. I need to get my butt in gear and get back to writing for eHow again. I only wrote 3 articles for them in April.
I will have my earnings update tomorrow!

Have you been able to make any money from affiliate links placed within the articles? I just wondered, e.g., referrals to Amazon books that are in context or are as listed as a resource (related to the content of the article you posted)

@Steve – I have made about $125 in the past two weeks from my articles. I am impressed by the potential of the earnings from affiliate marketing compared to eHow.

@MoneyEnergy – Thanks for the retweet – I am starting to get the hang of Twitter I think? Most of the time I sacrifice my sleep which isn’t good by I am trying to just get on top. Hit that tipping point ya know.
