Running a successful niche website (that actually earns money) takes a lot of hard work and patience. From finding the right mix of keywords to target, to physically setting up the website, there is nothing quick about earning income from this type of endeavor. The hard work doesn’t stop once the site is setup and the first couple articles have been published. A niche website can have the best content ever written but will not earn a penny without quality traffic.
One of the best long term strategies for driving traffic to a website of this nature is through link building. Adding links pointed towards a site will help improve how it ranks in the search engines for the targeted keywords.
I have recently identified a need to start a link building project for one of my niche websites in order to increase the amount of traffic and income generated. Here are my notes from the past week on my link building strategy.
Check out these past articles on my first two weeks of link building.

Pillar Article Stats – Week 3
It has been three weeks since I published my first pillar article on my niche site. I have not seen any positive results yet from this article in any of the main search engines. While I would love to see my article race to the top of the search engine results, I understand it takes a lot of time for this to happen. Here are a few statistics from the past week on my pillar article.
- Days Old – 21
- Rank on Google – Not in Top 100
- Rank on Yahoo – Not in Top 50
- Rank on Bing – Not in Top 50
As I add more and more links to this article, I anticipate my content will start to move up the search engine rankings for my targeted keywords.
Link Building Stats – Week 2
I didn’t write as many link building articles as I originally planned last week. I always seem to have such lofty goals and high expectations when identifying my tasks for the week. I still hit a few milestones for the week and am geared up for the tasks I want to accomplish this week.
I took the week off from publishing any new content on HubPages and focused on Info Barrel (iB) and Xomba instead. Here are the highlights of my link building tasks last week -
- 6 Info Barrel Articles – I published 6 new articles on Info Barrel that all link back to one of my Hubs. Each article is 500+ words in length and should help increase the strength of my Hubs. I have one remaining iB article to link back to a remaining Hub, which I plan to finish this week.
- 3 Xomba Articles – I had planned to write a Xomba Bookmark of 50+ words for each of my Hubs and Info Barrel articles. Instead, I wrote 2 Xomba Articles of 150+ words and actually saw some positive results. I was surprised at how well these articles ranked on Google within a day of being published. This behavior reminds me a lot of how eHow articles could rank very quickly, sometimes within hours of being published.
Next Steps
I didn’t finish any of the tasks I planned on completing last week, instead focusing on a few other tasks. Here is what I have planned for the upcoming week on my link building project.
- EzineArticle – Including EzineArticles in my link building strategy is critical. While I can earn extra income from my Hubs and iB content, EzineArticles can provide more authority to my pillar article. I am going to publish two of these articles, one for my targeted keyword and another for a synonym of the keyword – both linking to the pillar article.
- Squidoo Lens – I would still like to incorporate a Squidoo Lens into my link building project. Instead of focusing just on Hubs and Info Barrel content, I want to expand the list of Web 2.0 tools that I am leveraging. I would like to add at least 1 Lens that links directly back to my pillar article. I hope to finish building this lens this week and begin working to add links back to my Squidoo content.
- GoArticles & ArticlesBase – I plan to add 1 new article to each of these article directories. Each article will link directly back to my pillar article.
- Xomba – Instead of writing Xomba Bookmarks for my 5 main Hubs and 5 iB articles, I have decided to write Xomba Articles. I published 3 last week and hope to get the remaining 7 completed in the next week.
I have come to realize that link building takes a ton of time. In order to create quality links to my niche website, I need to take my time and build quality content that can stand the test of time. Instead of pushing out a bunch of junk, I am focusing on writing content that can actually help others. I believe this strategy will eventually pay off down the line.
Final Thoughts
Writing down the tasks I plan to accomplish each week helps me stay focused. Even though I altered from my task list last week, I am still determined to follow through on my strategy for building quality links to my niche website. I am confident that all of this hard work will pay off in the future.

John, building quality backlinks sucks. Hear me out. Anyone can go to forums and spam Craig’s List with links. What I (and I believe you as well) am trying to do is create quality (or at least decent content) that will take a bit of time to create backlinks.
What sucks the most is waiting for Google to ‘catch-up’. Keep at it, give it some time. Ezine Articles is showing a little bit of promise. YouTube is next for me.
@Moon – I agree that building quality backlinks is frustrating, but well worth the effort. To me it comes down to providing some quality content that someone else may find useful someday. Let me know how your YouTube stuff works out.
I totally agree! I am having family issues due to the amount of time I am having to spend on backlinks. I just started my site and my competition has about 5200 backlinks so I have a long way to go. I think quality content is more important though so I am trying to focus on that as well. Best of luck to you.
