Benefits of Home Based Jobs

in Starting a Home Business

Home based jobs can come in all different forms. Whether your employer allows you to work from home or you have decided to start your own at home business, there are many options available. While there can be some disadvantages to working from home (i.e. internet and utility costs), the advantages of working at your residence are far greater. Having the ability and opportunity to avoid the daily grind at the office or factory reduces stress and gives you several freedoms you don’t find in any workplace.

Some employers allow their employees to work from home most of the time, requiring them to come into workplace a few times per month. Other businesses give their employees the option to work from home a few days per week. Having your own home based business provides even greater opportunities from working at home compared with employees who are required to come into the office.

Here are several benefits of working from home that can save you money and give you more time to do the things you enjoy in life.

  • Clothing – Home based jobs can allow one to spend less on work attire. Even if your company allows you to work part-time from home, there are less days you are required to go into the office which means less clothes to buy.
  • Gas – With gas prices on the rise, this can be a huge money saver by working from home. Even if you were to work from home one day per week, the savings over the course of one year could be huge. Many schools and other state and government offices are even looking to shorten their weeks to four days in some places to save on transportation costs.
  • Lunch – Even if you bring your lunch to work the majority of the time, there always seems to be those temptations to go out to lunch with co-workers. Working at home removes any temptations you may have to go out and spend extra money on lunch, coffee, breakfast, etc.
  • Safety – If you are driving or commuting less to your work location, you will most likely be safer. The less you are on the roads and diving in rush hour traffic, the less your chances of being in an automobile accident.
  • Car Maintenance – Less driving means fewer oil changes on your vehicle and less wear and tear. You will not need new tires as often and can keep the miles off your vehicle by working from home. In some cases, working from home may even allow you to get rid of your car which can really save you money by eliminating a car payment and insurance on the vehicle.
  • Time – Home based jobs give you back a lot of your time. By working from home, some people can probably save hours in their day just by eliminating any commute to work. If you are in business for yourself, this extra time can be used to help grow your business and explore new opportunities.
  • Environment – Working at home is just better for the environment. Anytime you can cutback on driving or commuting to work (unless you bike or walk), you are reducing emissions that go into our atmosphere. You are also more likely to be energy conscious as you are paying the bill for heating and electricity instead of your employer.

Home based jobs can save workers a lot of time and money. That extra time can be used for a variety of things, but for anyone involved in creating passive income – that time savings is huge! In addition to the time savings, money is another important benefit of working from home. The extra money you save from reducing your costs can be used to increase your savings or help pay off any debt. Even if the savings is a few dollars per month, that money can add up. Working from home also reduces waste and cuts down on the amount of pollution we are creating each day.

For some people, working from home may not be an option. Many employers still require their employees to come into work each day – which is completely understandable. That is why building your own passive income streams is so important to those wanting to have the freedom to work from home or maybe even the beach!

I work from home around 90% of the time, the biggest advantages are definitely saved time from not being stuck in traffic during a commute and saved gas/wear and tear on my car. I think I get gas around once a month now that I work from home.

The downside though is you really have to be strong at keeping away from the little distractions, like commenting on blog articles when you should be working. :-)

@Kyle – Good point. It would be difficult for me to work at home right now. I have a 5 and 2 year old sons that would be very distracting.

I hardly ever work from home, and I find it distracting when I do. There’s just too much going on in my household to allow me to focus. I actually like going to the office!
