For those of you who write for eHow, I am sure you know by now that the latest article sweep is in process. I see this as a good and bad thing to be honest. Nobody wants to have their hard work deleted and thrown away, but the sweep process can help improve the quality of the site.
I wasn’t immune from the latest cleaning of the eHow article library. Yesterday, I received an email from eHow stating they are “… making great strides to clean up the eHow article library…”. I knew exactly what that meant – its sweep time again! I have mixed emotions about this process whenever eHow goes through these sweeps. This round was no different, so I thought I would break it down into the “Good, Bad, and Ugly” below.
The Good
Since posting my number one problem with eHow, it appears they have made some changes for the better. Here are a few changes that eHow is communicating -
- Deliver article clean up communications every week.
- Members of eHow will be notified shortly after an article has been published if it will be removed.
- Articles will be pre-screened once they are submitted to ensure they meet the standards.
All of these items seem to be a very positive step in the right direction to fix things. The other thing I always notice (and can never really complain about) is the nice earnings jump that seems to follow immediately after the sweep is complete. I noticed it once again during this round.
The Bad
I don’t enjoy losing my hard work and articles that I have submitted. I lost 3 eHow articles to the latest sweep, one of which was a big earner for me (almost $40 in 3 months). The other two were not as big of a deal.
Fortunately, I have made copies of my articles and can quickly turn them around on a different site somewhere else.
The Ugly
I can live with the Good and Bad that I noted above as it is part of a cleansing process that I always seem to benefit from (even though I lose articles along the way). What I can’t tolerate is the continued poor communication between eHow and it’s members. As noted earlier, it appears they have listened to their members and have made some changes to improve the communication process. Unfortunately, they introduced new communication issues that I find to be unacceptable.
This is a portion of the email communication that I received about the article cleanup –
“For your reference, this email has been sent to you because one or more of your articles have been removed from your account for violating eHow submission guidelines. Please click on the link below to find a list of all affected titles with reasons for removal next to each of them.”
When I first clicked the link in the morning, I had one article show up. Several hours later, I noticed that my number of published articles dropped again, so I clicked the link and three articles showed up. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to send out the communication once the article cleaning process was completed? This is just another example of how poor the eHow site is at communicating with their members.
To make matters worse, notice the phrase in the quote above – “… reasons for removal next to each of them.”. Guess what? There were no reasons (AGAIN!) next to my articles telling me why it was removed. This is one of the most frustrating things that I find with eHow. Don’t tell me that there is a reason noted next to my article on why it was deleted when it isn’t even there!
Obviously they are still working out the communication kinks.
Oh yeah – and may I add that there is no security or privacy around the links that eHow sent out. If you got the link, you can simply change the username to someone else you know and see what articles they lost. Not cool!
Want to see my articles that got deleted? Check them out (it is obviously public information) – PFIncome Deleted Articles.
How did you make out on the latest eHow article sweep? Are you frustrated with the poor communication they use with their members? Is it enough for you to leave?

I also lost three articles (so far) to this sweep. My strategy was to pick a niche (* of the month clubs) and run through the list summarizing options and providing prioritization of things to consider based on the clubs out there. The odd thing is of the 15 or so articles from that niche they chopped 3. I figured it would be an all or nothing proposition. This is where it would be nice to see what they didn’t like about those articles. I too have saved my articles…where do you end up taking yours once they are swept?
I still think that we will continue to use eHow, even through all of the frustration (I’ve got beef with their posting process). The convention they have for posting articles is very easy and they don’t require a lot of in depth writing compared to what I’ve seen at other sites (Helium, Ezine, etc.) I haven’t really investigated too much though, so I could be wasting my time at eHow.

@Reed – That is interesting that they chose to delete a portion of your articles that are similar. It is hard to tell what is safe anymore with them. I am going to take my articles over to Info Barrel to start. How about you?

Have you written alot of articles for eHow, John?…
I’m not sure if you can dub this a “Bad” thing, but one thing about Info Barrel is that they don’t allow repeat content on their site….which, typically places eHow users in a dilemma….
While they sometimes get frustrated with eHow, sometimes the current earnings are too much for them to just strip off all their articles and just leave (errr….maybe not a good analogy…but, probably similar to an abusive relationship…)….
I do tell people that, if they do choose to write for eHow, that they keep all their articles saved to a Word document so, that, if they ever get deleted…or if they feel it’s time to move on, that they can just quickly upload them to another website…..
I don’t feel comfortable with eHow at all. But, that’s just me.

@Howie – I have written over 240 articles on eHow and have had less than 20 deleted. I think you hit the nail on the head about saving the articles in a Word document as a backup. That gives you the ability to go and publish your hard work somewhere else if you choose to.
I lost two articles in this sweep but I’ve only published six. One of them was not making much money and the other one would have been outdated after the end of the year so it isn’t that big of a deal. The way eHow is handling things is part of the reason I haven’t tried to make more money on their site.

@Andy – So what other sites or income streams are you focusing on?

I lost one article on Ehow. Unfortunately, it’s my highest earner and I can’t find anything wrong with it. I’m trying not to be cycnical about the site. But one message is clear: Diversify!

@Ehow Writer – Seems like a lot of people are losing their top earning articles which I find strange. You bring up a great point in diversification.

I lost 3 articles today… I did not, however, receive an email informing me of which ones were lost. Like you mentioned, communication is the key and is something that ehow really needs to learn.

I received one today with an apology, stating that some members did not receive either 1)the original email or 2)a reason why their articles were deleted.
I got the same reason as last time; ‘common sense’. I just do not get it. Nothing I write about is common sense. I guess the eHow staffers are just brilliant.

@Dusty – Good point. I also got a follow up email and saw the very vague reasoning for my articles that got deleted.
Just sent this to the owners of Info Barrel….they are so accessible, I speak to them (Kevin and Ryan) frequently on Facebook…

“…..Nobody wants to have their hard work deleted and thrown away, but the sweep process can help improve the quality of the site…..”
John, I TRULY believe that, had eHow implemented some of the same controls as Info Barrel, that they would not have to be continually faced with having to conduct these massive, site-wide, article sweeps…..some of the most influential eHow writers have left me comments on my articles stated that it is truly unfortunate what eHow has been doing….it’s not a safe place for writers, or their content, in my honest and humble opinion…..

oh….and, just posted it to Pat’s fan page (from smartpassiveincome.com)….

Yeah, well I lost 16 articles in the sweep. Basically, they took my top 12 earning articles and flushed the toilet. The other 4 were good earners, albeit not my best. Seems like they only left me with a bunch non-earners. Nice! Guess infobarrell will get all of my new articles, despite the fact that even my best infobarrel articles seem to have an extremely bad click rate. Writing EZAs that point to self-owned websites is looking more and more appealing. Oh well.

@Mace – That really stinks that your top earners are gone. Running your own sites is the best option. Too bad it doesn’t pay as well right away. Best of luck to you.

Ugh, this is crazy. I too was sent an email with just one article deleted. Next morning, there were over 10, many of which were my top earning articles.
Do you think they would be using the amount we earn from each article as a measurement of how “unsatisfactory” it is? Maybe they think that people clicking on the ads means there isn’t enough information in the article, so people are looking for more information. I don’t know, just a theory…
I really wish they would at least give us a day or two warning as to which articles will be deleted, or give us a chance to change them so they do comply to their rules.
Sigh & diversify.

@Pat – That is an interesting theory. I hate to say it, but I don’t trust eHow as much as I use to (even 3 months ago). I will probably still write a few articles there, but am probably going to move on to better things.

I really think a lot of you are being very kind to E-how. A few of the times that I receive info on why my articles were deleted is when I had to practically beg for it. The last two times I gave up. Secondly, One of the sweeps they deleted an article which they said was “common sense” and then an ehow contributing writer wrote the same article with the same exact title using my links. I hung in there with e-how and still have 195 articles there now. I have decided info Barrel is the place to be. I refuse to write for e-how. My income has decreased measurable with each sweep. I feel cheated and ignored at e-how.

@Howie, thanks for all the kind words about InfoBarrel.
I hate to see this happening to everybody and would probably be pretty stressed out too if I was seeing a lot of my articles (especially my top earners) being removed.
With that being said, as long as you are following the editorial guidelines, we are open to everybody, disgruntled or not to come on over to Infobarrel and post your articles.
I’ve read a few people having troubles earning with us, but know a number of people who are making over $500/month without a substantial amount of articles.
On the contrary, if anybody EVER any issues with our platform, I invite you to join our Facebook page, where you can freely ask any questions and get assistance with any problem you may have. Alternatively, you can send us an email and one of our staff will get back to you generally within 24-36 hours (outside of weekends).
We pride ourselves on customer service, after all, without happy writers, these communities become rather worthless.
I hope for every bodies sake this is the last article sweep over at ehow.
Happy Writing!

I know I stripped all 150+ of my articles off of eHow, but, I can understand if people would have difficulty doing this, in order to satisfy the editorial guidelines of websites like Info Barrel (they require that no article submitting their website appear anywhere else…)…..ultimately, I think that people will just get tired of eHow, and get pushed to a breaking point, and just leave all together….
fortunately, Info Barrel does have an extremely user friendly interface which really wouldn’t take that long to upload article content over there….

I left eHow for good today and deleted all of my articles. I had joined a few months ago after being led to believe that a good SEO writer could average $5 per month per article there. So not true. And things are getting worse. If you search Google for your titles now, you will invariably find related eHow UK articles listed below yours instead of related eHow US articles, as used to be the case. Yet eHow does not appear to be paying writers for their articles used on eHow UK (which all eHow articles are now). Since eHow will not answer the question as to whether they pay for these, I assume they do not. So eHow writers now have non-paying versions of their own articles competing in Google search results with their original articles. eHow will continue to get away with acting in bad faith as long as they have forum posters who ridicule those who point out eHow’s shortcomings, and encourage new people who don’t know better to hang in there. Let them have eHow. I am moving on and investing no more of my valuable time and energy in a system that is not what it pretends to be.
