Hmmm that is the hub of my problem - my monthly power bill is only $40 - and most of that is the TV/Fridge/2 laptops etc etc - I doubt that 1/2ing my lighting bill is going to save me even a $1/month - the payback time is basically infinite if we move house every year or so- as most renters do I should think... @Passive Income – I do understand your points on CFL bulbs and link LED bulbs are the future. However, I have seen a very nice drop in energy costs by using them on our front porch. We like to have our lights on all night long as we don’t yet have street lights in our neighborhood. As soon as I put those in last year our monthly bill dropped.
