Do you work from home? Have you established a productive work environment out of your home to ensure you are working as effectively as you possibly can? If you own a business or are a freelancer, then you probably do a lot of your work out of your home. Maybe you are thinking about getting out of the corporate rat race and are looking to go into business for yourself? Or maybe you have worked out an agreement with your boss to start working from home? The number of individuals choosing to work from home is on a steady rise because of the advantages it poses to individuals and businesses.

Working from home has many advantages today that individuals and families seek because of various personal reasons. Having the ability to conduct your business from the comforts of you own home introduces many advantages for people that working from a office do not have. Unfortunately, working from home also introduces many disadvantages, such as multitasking that can cause you problems. There are however some ways to prevent inefficiencies from working out of your home.

Here are 5 things that you can do to create a productive work environment from your home.

  1. Establish a Space – Not having a defined space in your home to work from can prevent you from being at the top of your game. Be sure to create your own space that is efficiently stocked with the supplies that you need, as well as away from major distractions. As a father of two great boys, I can’t stress the importance of this point enough. When I first started out building passive income streams from home, I realized this the hard way. Kids love to play with computers and papers they see lying around. There is just something tempting to them to get into things they know they are not suppose to. Avoid this problem by defining an established work space that is off limits to any children or outside parties.
  2. Turn off the Television – One of the top productivity killers is the television and other electronic devices that get in our way. It is very important to reduce distractions as a way to create a productive work environment from home. If you need some background noise, then try listening to some music – just be sure that it isn’t talk radio or something that pulls your attention away from your work.
  3. Read e-mail Sparingly – I know that I am guilty of reading e-mail way too often. There have been a few times that I caught myself just sitting there waiting for e-mails to come so I could read them. Reading e-mail can be a huge distraction whether you work from home or at an office. Most employees spend several hours per day just reading and sending out e-mails, which most of the time are worthless. If you are trying to create a productive work environment from home, try limiting reading e-mails to once per day. I have recently made this change when working from home on building passive income and it has really helped me become more efficient.
  4. Stay Focused – In order to create a productive work environment from home, you must define a schedule and stick to it. One of the advantages of working from home is the freedom it gives you to define your own schedule. Just be sure you define that schedule! It shouldn’t matter if you choose to work in the middle of the night, a few hours spread throughout the day, or a 9 to 5 schedule. Instead of focusing on the number of hours you are working, concentrate on the work you are completing. Make a list of the tasks that you need to get done each day and complete them regardless if they take 10 hours or 1 hour! Now that you are in charge, you are defining what needs to get completed in order to be successful.
  5. Manage Your Time – It can be difficult separating your personal life with your work life when working from home. Whether you are a freelancer who is self-employed, or work for a company out of your home – you have more responsibility to manage your time compared to working out of a office. This can be both a good and bad thing depending on how you look at it. It is good in that you now have more freedoms to set your own agenda and goals. On the other hand, if you have poor time management skills, then you will need to really stay focused and concentrate on setting your priorities and sticking to them.

The 5 tips on creating a productive work environment from home are just a few examples that I have come across in my own experience. There are plenty more that I am sure I will come across in the future. Overall, the important thing to keep in mind is that by working from home, you have gained a certain type of freedom that many others don’t have. To be successful, you must use those freedoms to your advantage instead of mistreating them!

Do you work from home? What tips can you provide on maintaining a productive work environment from your home?

I have found this hard recently. I have found that the list of tasks is one of the best things for me, though, and many days I was finishing most of my work by lunch! And finding out that I work SO much better in the morning also really helped. Unfortunately I’m just going through a bad patch at the moment in terms of productivity!
