Is it Frugal or is it Stealing?

by passivefamilyincome

I take pride in the fact that my wife and I are very frugal people. We try and save money any place that we can. Whether it be using our left over fish tank water on our house plants to wearing our cloths numerous times before they go into the wash, we try to live frugally whenever possible. There are times however when we are faced with interesting decisions on when something is considered to be frugal or just plain stealing. It amazes me what people do sometimes to save a buck that is flat out against the law. I have put together a list of items that either I or someone close to me has taken part in that could be considered questionable in nature.

  • Borrowing items from restaurants - I don’t know about you, but we have a stack of napkins sitting in our pantry from various fast food joints. We also have a collection of straws and plastic silverware from these establishments. It seems that anytime we go to a fast food restaurant, my wife and I always get a stack of napkins and straws for our meal not realizing the other has done the same. Instead of returning the other set of items back to the counter, we just take them home with us. Is this stealing? We don’t purposely do it, but at the same time we are taking more than what we use at the restaurant. I have a problem returning these napkins and straws back up to the counter once we realize we have too much. There is an element of hygiene and cleanliness involved. My wife and I know try and communicate better as to who is getting the items and who is not.
  • Water for Pop (Soda) - Sticking with the fast food theme, I know of some close relatives who consistently order a glass of water at fast food joints and then turn around and fill the cup with pop (or soda as some refer to it). These relatives think this practice is more than acceptable because of the prices the restaurants charge. I find this to be stealing and don’t practice it. I will admit however that we sometimes order an extra large pop and share it between my 4-year old son and I. We have been known to go and get a refill on that glass.
  • The Cable Guy - Come on, everyone knows a friend who is a cable guy. While I was in college, my roommates and I knew a friend from high school who worked for the local cable company. He came out and flipped the switch at the box for us and gave us free cable. At the time we thought it was great! However, I can no longer condone this type of activity and consider it to be stealing.
  • Undercharged -Every once in a while my wife and I are actually undercharged for an item that a cashier missed or made a mistake on. I am happy to say that each and every time this has ever happened to me and I realized it at the time of purchase, I corrected them. There have been times when we didn’t realize that we were undercharged until much later. In these situations, we just accept the mistake made by the cashier and move on. I will say that if an item rings up cheaper than what we think it was marked, then we don’t question that. It is only when human error occurs.
  • Fallen money - Sticking with the “undercharged” item, on a couple of occasions I have seen money fall out of someone’s pocket or seen it laying right next to a person. I am also happy to say that each and every time this happens, I let the person know that they dropped some money or ask them if it was theirs. I feel very strongly on this point because I would want people to do the same for me.
  • Senior Discount - My mother-in-law has some hair starting to turn gray (okay really turning white). Often times cashiers will offer her senior discounts (movies, retail stores, etc.) when she is many years away from the typical 62 - 65 age range for these discounts. Many times she goes along with it and says that if they think she is that old, then what the heck. I must say that I can’t blame her and would probably do the same.
  • Free Internet @ work - Ok - I do this all the time. How many people don’t use the internet at work for personal use? I am sure they are out there but I could probably count them on one hand. I use the internet at work to check personal emails, pay bills, etc. I think that if it doesn’t impact your work and you are not doing anything illegal, then this is acceptable as long as the company does not have any rules or guidelines against it.
  • Free Toilet Paper - What? I don’t do this but have known some co-worker’s who apparently loved the feel of the company’s toilet paper so much that they decided to stock up with some for their home. STEALING!
  • Printing - Alright, I use to do this at work and am ashamed of it. I have used the printer at work for personal use from time to time (and at more than one job). While I was not printing off 900 page novels, I was still using ink and paper on the company’s dime for my personal use. I no longer practice this behavior but know way too many people that do.
  • What have I missed?

I have become a true believer in karma. Maybe not to the extent of the My Name is Earl show, but I feel that if you live your life in a good and positive way that good things will happen to you. I didn’t always feel this way, but have grown through the years. I now think about these types of situations listed above when making a decision and how it relates to karma. Will a choice I make bring bad energy back into my life? If I am taking something for free that I know I shouldn’t, what type of impact will that have on me? How do my kids view this behavior? These are the questions I now answer when making these simple day to day choices.

Have you ever done any of things things? Do you think they are frugal actions or just plain stealing? What other things have you or someone else you know done that borders on stealing?

This is a great rundown of the ways different things can be perceived as frugal, cheap, or downright theft! By the way, I could never steal toilet paper from my company–they use that 1-ply cheapo stuff!

Frugal Dad - Thanks for the visit. Yeah - work TP is about the worse kind available. Sandpaper may be better.

It’s starting to get a little weird how similar our view are passive. My wife and I have talked about these same topics in the past as they have arisen.

The one thing that I can think of that isn’t on the list is similar to the napkins/utencils comment. It’s the people who take all of the “free” things from, typically, restaurants and hotels. The sugar, splenda, etc.. packets from restaurants and the soap, shampoo etc… from hotels.

I have to admit that I have done both. In hotels where they throw away the used shampoo, etc.. bottles everyday, we will hide the opened bottle that we have already used so we can get the “freebie” replacement. Our rationale is that their policy is to throw away the unused portion that we would have used anyway, so we might as well get to keep the one their replacing it with.

However, if the hotel/maid staff doesn’t throw away our open container on their first cleaning, we don’t hide them. I just think it’s silly for them to throw away a half of a bottle of shampoo and replace it with a new one each day, but if we can’t stop them from doing it, I’m not going to turn down those freebies. They would out very nicely for our guest bath. :-)

Most of these are in a grey area, although I do think ordering water and then filling your cup with soda (or coke as we call it down here) is definitely stealing. The justification that it’s ok because of what the restaurants charge is bogus. If you don’t want to pay what somebody is charging, you go without.

While I don’t steal the toilet paper from work, I do make a point of it to visit the bathroom before I go home, saving myself paper and water.

I must confess, I am guilty of printing at work… It is where I print all my coupons… Probably not the most moral thing in the world, I’ll have to think about it before I continue.

Excellent and honest post. I am guilty of a few of these, but I am proud to say that I always give back money if the cashier gives me too much change or undercharged me.

Great post.

What about taking pens from work to use at home? How about paperclips?

Kyle - Yes, many of those things are gray area.

Katharine - I have been guilty of printing coupons at work as well when my printer @ home needed a new cartridge and I didn’t want to spend the money to buy a new one!

Pete - I have been guilty of printing personal items from past jobs. In fact, I actually printed resumes, cover letters, etc. at my last job. Looking back, I am not very proud of that.

Pinyo - Thanks for the visit!

Curt - Thanks for the kind words. Good point on the pens. I have a nice collection of pens at home from my current job and actually from my last job.

I only use the Internet at work during breaks/before and after work. I’m too busy to use it any other time!

But my lunch break is ALL mine, even if I’m eating at my desk because I want to use the Internet.

On the paper front, I have on occasion needed to print something, but I’ll ask my boss (we’re a small office). I think it’s only fair that he’s aware - he has no problem with printing off a few pages now and then, but definitely not each recipe that catches my eye! That’s when you PDF it and send it to yourself!

Also, free refills. I whole-heartedly participate in that. The purchase of your drink includes your free refill, so I use it. At the theatres here, you get a free refill with the large bags of popcorn - so I normally bring my bag home and return to the theatre with it the next time for my free popcorn. If it’s something they offer, then I’ve already paid for it, as far as I’m concerned.

Printing at work is a biggie. I knew a lot of people that used the color printer at work to print off pics of the kids and thought it was just a perk of working at the company. I also knew someone who stole office supplies and gave them to a teacher friend. She told me schools don’t have a budget for school supplies, so our company could donate some.

Office internet shopping is also a big one. Most people think it’s a basic right of working and it’s ok to shop online at work. Isn’t this similar to walking outside to a retail store while at work?

Also, I bet a few people are “borrowing” neighbors wifi connection for free too:)

Neat post!
I don’t even know why I’m telling anyone this, but I’ve refused to buy a bottle of ketchup for the last 3 years once I found out what’s in it. If we do go to a fast food restaurant, we’ll ask for some of ketchup packages–even though we’re not using them. That way we have some at home in case we ever do have a craving, or someone else needs ketchup when visiting our home. I don’t know whether this is wrong, but at least we’re eating much much less of an unhealthy thing!

As I am fond (perhaps overly fond of) telling my kids and their friends: “It is not how close you get the line but how far can you stay away that defines who you are”. Here in Canada, it is legal to download music and movies as long as you are doing it only for yourself. Stealing, well when the law changes it will be legally stealing - until then?

You hit on some gray areas. Some are obviously stealing but others I’m not so sure about.

A lot of people adopt the approach that ‘it is okay because everyone else is doing it’. This of course is no excuse.
